Guarantee

Earthworks Gallery does not, at this time, offer a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). We have seen and collected several over the years, and many are disappointingly vague or completely without merit. There are certainly many firms that produce a COA that is both accurate and informative, but there are others that use these certificates to perpetuate their fraud. A COA is not a guarantee of age or provenance. Its worth rests solely upon the expertise and honesty of the issuer. At Earthworks Gallery, every attempt has been made to date the artifact to the best of our knowledge. Having handled over 4,000 pieces of jade during the past ten years does not necessarily make us experts but it has given us the tools and a level of expertise that enables us to place most of these carvings within a fairly narrow historical framework. Our dating is approached in a very conservative manner and our jades are frequently much older than our claim. For instance, we may have a carving that we are fairly certain is Han Dynasty but we may feel more comfortable describing it as a Six Dynasties or even a Song Dynasty piece, given that the styles and sophistication of carving are similar. This will be clearly stated in the item description. The buyer is always given the benefit of any doubt.
